Violin and Piano
Usman started studying music at the age of nine in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. He only played the piano at the very beginning but soon realised that playing the violin would mean engaging and playing with other people in a group. He soon joined the National Youth Orchestra where he made lifetime friends and toured many cities within the country as well as Germany and the United States. The experience of connecting with all kind of people, travelling around the world and becoming a better person through music had a profound impact in his life and made him realise that he wanted to be a musician.
Usman continued his studies in the United States. During his college years he toured with the Youth Orchestra of the Americas, and graduated from their Global Leaders Program. He achieved a Master Degree in Violin. He travelled to Canada, Jamaica, and Haiti to partner with "El Sistema" inspired programmes, working with the underserved and underprivileged youth.
As a strong advocate for music education Usman believes that music has the power to break cultural barriers and change people’s lives. As he continues his journey with a reinforced sense of this calling he is able to see on a regular basis how music continues to touch him personally and everyone else around.
He says: "When we make personal and meaningful connections with music we become more sensitive and are empathetic towards each other!"
